San Diego County is sprawling at over 4,500 square miles. That means there are plenty of neighborhoods to suit nearly every lifestyle need and house-hunter desire. Whether you are looking for walk-ability, family friendly, city-living, or anything in between, here are some neighborhoods to consider.
Dog Lovers
Del Mar is home to North Beach, a half-mile stretch of sand that caters to canines. Pacific Beach, with its walk-ability, concentration of patio dining options and Fiesta Island Dog Park – is another good option for pet parents. Hillcrest is on the outskirts of the largest urban park in the country, Balboa Park. There are plenty of spots to play fetch with Fido here! If you’re looking for something a little further out, El Cajoneast of San Diego is home to Wells Park, a 1.4-acre off-leash park.
Empty Nesters
Kensington is located minutes from downtown and key San Diego attractions (think Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo and more). It’s an upscale neighborhood known for its historic residential area and distinct Spanish-style and craftsman homes. The pedestrian-friendly business district has a small, village feel with coffee shops, restaurants and boutique shopping all within three blocks. Encinitas, with its low crime rate, offers small-town charm with a suburban feel. Here, there are many newer homes with well-manicured lawns and condominium communities intermixed with shopping centers and office buildings.
Equestrians
Rolling hills, agriculture fields, ancient oak trees, and trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding all combine with a Mediterranean climate to make Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow in North San Diego County a unique place to call home for equestrian lovers. Here, you can get a sizeable piece of property for a lot less than in some other areas of the county, and the ocean is only 15 miles away. Rancho Santa Feis located just across the freeway from Del Mar, about four miles from the coast. This world-class, unincorporated community is characterized by wooded lots and equestrian estates. About 3,000 people live in Rancho Santa Fe, which is also home to the world-famous San Diego Polo Club.
Families
Poway, known as the “city in the country,” is a family-friendly suburban area north and east of Downtown San Diego with an acclaimed school system. The city incorporated in 1980 and is ranked as the safest city in San Diego County. A mid-sized suburban city with a population of around 86,500, Vista is located seven miles inland and 40 miles north of downtown San Diego. Vista has been listed among the best places to raise a family in the U.S and has numerous public schools within the Vista Unified School District, as well as a charter school and alternative high school. Coronado is a Norman Rockwell-eque community that has beautiful streets, meticulously cared for homes and amazing schools. Point Loma is a peninsular neighborhood that boasts top-rated schools in addition to a strong boating culture, local shops and the stunning Sunset Cliffs National Park.
Golfers
Meadows Del Mar is a nestled next to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar Hotel and the Grand Golf Club, a Tom Fazio-designed course. Set amidst the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, this luxury guard-gated community features 134 home sites boasting architecture that features Spanish, Mediterranean, French and Italian influences. Santaluz is a planned community in North County that is built around a Rees Jones-designed, 300-acre Santaluz Golf Course. The Crosby Estates RSF is a gated community that is part of the 18-hole Crosby Golf Club. There are 443 residences here, ranging from villa-style to single-family custom estates.
